Personally I thought it was a damn fine book. A very powerful story that I'm still musing over (don't want to put in spoilers as I know a couple of Legume chums shall be reading it shortly). And I was blown away by how well the structure of the story worked. Admittedly I thought the concept was cool when I first heard about it but having the Mother's journey told through the POV's of the other people she encountered strikes me as a particularly difficult thing to pull off. It was done impeccably though. I didn't lose her voice throughout but also the myriad of people she encounters all get their story told too. And told damn well (there's a couple of backstories that are just screaming out for a story of their own). A pretty clever tightrope act, all delivered in a clear, concise prose that somehow manages to convey both subtlety (yep subtlety) and downright brutality (seriously after some of the stuff that happens, you'll wonder why Lothian kicked up such a fuss about "those scenes") in so few words. Reminded me a lot of Ketchum at his finest in this regard. All I can say is the poor fucking truck driver (oops that was probably a rather large spoiler but fuck it)...
Nice job Brett
